Assistance with estate planning, advance directives and wills is among the core services that Access Justice Brooklyn has provided for over 20 years and remains a central component of our work today. In addition, we provide direct assistance with probate matters for small estates ($50,000 or less).

While life planning documents are essential to ensuring that wishes regarding personal assets and medical care are followed, an estimated 1 in 3 people do not have estate plans.

Access Justice Brooklyn provides free estate planning services to qualifying Brooklyn residents. Planning gives you peace of mind and ensures your voice is heard and your wishes are followed.

What Is a Will and Why Do You Need One?

A will is a legal document that outlines how you want your property distributed after your death. It allows you to:

  • Decide who inherits your property.
  • Appoint guardians for your children under the age of 18.
  • Choose someone you trust to handle your affairs.

Without a will, New York State decides how your assets are divided—possibly in ways you wouldn’t want. Creating a will helps your loved ones avoid unnecessary stress and confusion and is a good idea for everyone—even if you have limited assets.

Trusts & Other Arrangements

We also provide other estate planning options, like trusts, if you own a home, want to avoid probate, or need more control over how your assets are managed and distributed.

Additional Planning Documents We Offer:

  • Power of Attorney (POA): Appoint someone to manage your finances if you can’t.
  • Health Care Proxy (HCP): Choose a person to make medical decisions on your behalf.
  • Living Will: Express your wishes for end-of-life medical care.
